Award winning journalist and ITV newsreader Nina Hossain inspires Hill View students

Primary students were delighted to welcome award winning journalist and television newsreader, Nina Hossain into their Year 3 classroom named in her honour, at Hill View Academy.

As part of the school’s Kirklees and Proud cross-curricular project, classes at Hill View Academy are named after famous individuals from the past and present who were born in Kirklees and have gone on to achieve great things in different professions and industries. The school’s project aims to give children a sense of place, belonging, and aspiration.

During the visit, Nina shared her experiences as a journalist and newsreader with the children, answering questions about her own school days, career journey and the favourite aspects of her job. The children impressed Nina with their own journalist work, including written and video reports on volcanic eruptions and the Viking Raid on Lindisfarne.

Nina also took the opportunity to talk to the students about the significance of education, discussing what they enjoyed about school and encouraging them to pursue their dreams with dedication and tenacity. She emphasised the power of knowledge and urged the children to stay curious and informed about the world around them. She said of her visit:

“What a privilege it was to visit such a charming school. The pupils were delightful. A fantastic bunch of engaged, eloquent and enthusiastic young learners, a credit to all the staff and to Huddersfield too. I still cannot believe there is a class named after me, what an honour!”

Lisa Lockwood, Year 3 teacher Hill View, expressed her gratitude for Nina’s visit, saying:

“We are thrilled to have had Nina Hossain visit our school and share her experiences with our students. As someone who was born locally, she is a role model for them; she exemplifies the heights of achievement that they can reach through hard work, persistence and a passion for knowledge. By naming our classes after remarkable individuals from Kirklees, we aim to instil a sense of pride and the determination to succeed in our students. We want them to dream big and realise their ambitions, just like Nina.”
